Norman’s Cay, Exumas

We arrived at an anchorage on the west side of Norman’s Cay today, after a 6 hour sail from Green Cay outside of Nassau. We had great winds for sailing and aside from being a little bumpy, it seemed ideal. True to form, we had a few things break: Our outhaul line snapped just as we were discussing reefing the main, even though the winds were below 20 knots, and then after we reefed, our 1st reef line tore off of our sail. Neither of these are the end of the world, but we are not in the mood to fix more broken things on the boat. I didn’t love the final entry into our anchorage because we were looking right at a big rainstorm and it seemed as though we were sailing directly into it. It did rain on us a little, which is nice for rinsing the boat after lots of saltwater spray, and we managed to avoid the big storm cloud.

We connected with another kid boat family through an online community of families who sail. They sailed the Bahamas last year for 6 months so they’re a wealth of knowledge. They have two boys who are the same ages as Jackson and Spencer and we all totally hit it off. We joined up to snorkel a cool submerged plane wreck of a drug-runner’s plane from the 90’s. Then we took our dinghys to explore the island and we ended up at Norman’s “Pond”, a deep and spectacular area fed by a very narrow, shallow passageway from the ocean to the East. It was our favorite experience so far; absolutely stunning and really fun as well!

Most of the people we have met on our journey are all talking about the upcoming weather, and we’re evaluating where the best place will be to take shelter from the big winds the islands will be getting in the next several days. Our boat could probably make it into the “Pond” at high tide, and would be very well protected there, but we are concerned about being stuck there for a few days, unable to leave back into the ocean through the small passageway, the East, because that’s where the strong winds will be coming from.

The “cool submerged plane wreck” sounds fantastic. Do you have an underwater camera? And I don’t mean the one you dropped in the water. 🤪😂
