While the boys stayed with Tommy’s parents (Noni and Pa) at their house in Mims, FL, Tommy and I sailed from Port Canaveral to Ft. Lauderdale with Richard, a captain with whom we were required to sail for our insurance company. It was irritating that we had to fulfill the requirement at first, but as we spent a week with him on the boat we learned a ton. Richard has been all over the world on all the sailing vessels you can possibly imagine, and had countless incredible stories to tell. He is extremely knowledgeable and was a great resource. Also, during an overnight sail in pretty rough conditions, our main halyard broke, so Richard hooked us up with people he knew in Fort Lauderdale who were able to replace it right away. We had some new cockpit cushions installed there, and Tommy found his new favorite store, the Boatowner’s Warehouse.
We were thrilled to get to pick up the boys and bring them aboard in Fort Pierce where we tried to get settled into boat life a bit by doing school (on the roof of the aft cockpit), getting comfortable with driving the dinghy, and working on fishing skills. We stayed at a marina where we waited for Devin the engine guy to complete the work on our port engine, which was, of course, “tired”.
